Mostly use baking soda for, well, baking? If so, you’re missing out on a ton of potential health and beauty benefits. Though mostly used for recipes or deodorizing small spaces – your fridge, perhaps? - baking soda is a versatile household staple that is well-suited for many other purposes. Here are a few lesser-known ways to use baking soda.
Unclog pores with a DIY mask.
Baking soda is a miracle product when it comes to deep-cleaning and exfoliating – both of which are important to clear congested skin. Make your own DIY face mask with the household staple, lemon juice (which will brighten your skin), and honey (which is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and a natural emollient). To try it for yourself, simply mix 1 or 2 teaspoons of baking soda with the juice from half a lemon and a squirt of honey. Apply the mixture to a clean face, let sit for 15 minutes, and rinse.
Clean your produce.
Fresh fruits and veggies are great, but those toxic chemicals sprayed on them to prevent insects, germs and weeds are not. So, clean your produce when you arrive home from the grocery store with baking soda, which the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry recommends as being the most effective against pesticide residue. Fill a large bowl with 2 cups of water, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and submerge for at least 2 minutes. The longer you leave your produce, the better you’ll clean them. Rinse produce once more before eating.
Soak up oil spills.
Nothing spoils your time in the kitchen quite like an accidental oil spill. When you have a pool of oil on your hands, don’t simply reach for a towel and hope for the best – reach for baking soda, which will absorb the oil’s extra moisture and make cleanup easier. First, dab the stain with a damp washcloth. Then, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the stain to cover it. Let the baking soda sit for an hour, before using a broom or vacuum cleaner to remove it. Follow up with a cleaning product to treat the stain.
